A bill moving through Missouri’s legislature seeks to prohibit police statewide from enforcing federal gun laws — despite federal courts ruling an earlier version of the law was unconstitutional. How could this bill impact Missouri law enforcement and residents?

The Missouri law known as the "Second Amendment Preservation Act" forbade police from enforcing federal gun laws that don’t have an equivalent state law, and threatened officers with fines. A federal court ruled it violated the supremacy clause.

In an unusually fast response from federal authorities, the men were not charged with shooting the weapons, but rather with trafficking, illegal sales and lying to federal agents. One of the weapons was illegally bought at Frontier Justice, where Missouri Gov. Mike Parson signed the since-blocked "Second Amendment Preservation Act."

Missouri passed a law in 2021 that makes federal gun restrictions illegal in the state and bars officials from enforcing laws that would "infringe" upon the right to "bear arms." It also allows anyone to sue law enforcement who don't comply.

The litigation asks a Cole County judge to reject the proposed constitutional amendments or rewrite the summary and fiscal note.

Before Tuesday's inauguration for a second term as the mayor of Kansas City, Quinton Lucas held a community listening session for mothers who have been affected by gun violence. He also announced new proposed intervention efforts and restrictions on firearms for minors.

Camden County Presiding Commissioner Ike Skelton has called the ATF unconstitutional. The statement comes after his brother was indicted for illegally selling guns to undercover ATF agents.
