Carl Allen played many genres of music before finding his home in jazz.

After Bobby Watson's long tenure, Carl Allen is the newly appointed William D. and Mary Grant Endowed Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Missouri - Kansas City.

Carl Allen's teaching career includes a 12-year tenure at the Juilliard School as the artistic director of jazz studies. In his position at UMKC, Allen plans to continue building the rich program that others before him started.

When asked about Kansas City's reputation as a jazz hub or even a jazz capital, Allen stated "It has a solid place in the music because of all the great musicians who come from here . . . . you know people are going to talk about New Orleans, New York and Chicago but Kansas City is right there".
