Amtrak's Heartland Flyer, a daily passenger train, currently follows a 206-mile route from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to Fort Worth, Texas. Under a proposal from the state of Kansas, Wichita and several other cities will be added along the line.

Four people were killed and dozens injured when an Amtrak train struck a dump truck and derailed Monday in rural Missouri. Ambulances and helicopters took 150 passengers to area hospitals, while some were brought to a local high school for first aid.

On Monday, Amtrak cut services between Kansas City and St. Louis by half. Now only one round trip per day is offered, and many riders say they are having to change their travel or work plans.

South-central Kansas has been missing from Amtrak's map for decades. President Joe Biden's massive infrastructure plan could bring passenger service back to the region.

The passenger rail service may eventually come to Wichita and offer service south to Oklahoma.
