The painterly, the perfumed and the patriotic: Music by Paul Hindemith, Manuel de Falla and Aaron Copland
Co-hosts Michael Stern and Dan Margolies explore the music and motivation of three distinct musical voices of the 20th century. We'll hear live Kansas City Symphony performances of Paul Hindemith's "Mathis der Maler," Manuel de Falla's "Nights in the Gardens of Spain," and Aaron Copland's "Symphony No. 3" which incorporates his "Fanfare for the Common Man." We'll also hear Paul Hindemith's "Ragtime," which is his fun riff on themes by Johann Sebastian Bach.
Britten's orchestra and Hindemith's metamorphosis
Michael Stern and Dan Margolies celebrate the November birthdays of Paul Hindemith and Benjamin Britten. We'll hear three works from Britten including the ever popular "Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra," as well as Hindemith's "Symphonic Metamorphosis" and "Les preludes" by Franz Liszt.
Catch the 'polyphony bug' with The Tallis Scholars on Classical KC

A musical kaleidoscope: Pärt, Beethoven, Martinů and Bartók
Join co-hosts Michael Stern and Dan Margolies for a varied program of four masterworks. We'll hear Arvo Pärt's "Fratres," Beethoven's Fourth Symphony, Bohuslav Martinů's "Les fresques de Piero della Francesca" and Béla Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra.
Poetry in motion, with music from Rimsky-Korsakov to William Grant Still
It's poetry in motion as co-hosts Michael Stern and Dan Margolies explore a wonderfully dramatic set of music including Beethoven's "Leonore Overture No. 3," William Grant Still's "Poem for Orchestra," Alexander Scriabin's "The Poem of Ecstasy," Hector Berlioz's "Le Corsaire Overture," and a recent performance by the Kansas City Symphony of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's sweeping symphonic poem: "Scheherazade."
Changing with the times: From Franz Josef Haydn to Carlos Simon
In the spirit of a new year, co-hosts Michael Stern and Dan Margolies highlight five works never before heard on these broadcasts. We'll hear Mozart's "Serenade No. 11 for Winds," Haydn's "Symphony No. 64," "Rainbow Body" by Christopher Theofanidis, Carlos Simon's "Warmth From Other Suns," and the "Burlesque in D Minor for Piano and Orchestra" by a young Richard Strauss.
Springtime melodies from Bach, Haydn and Beethoven
Celebrate the changing seasons with Kansas City Symphony performances of orchestral favorites including Bach's "Air on the G String" and "Brandenburg Concerto No. 3." We'll also hear Yo-Yo Ma as soloist on Haydn's "Concerto in D Major" and guest conductor Ludovic Morlot leads the orchestra through Beethoven's bucolic "Symphony No. 6."
Five Guests And The Five B's
Bach, Beethoven and Brahms are known as "The Three B's," but this week we'll hear music from five other B's: Borodin, Bartók, Barber, Busoni and Johann Christian Bach. These performances are led by five guest conductors and include solo turns from pianist Alessio Bax and then-Kansas City Symphony concertmaster Noah Geller.
New discoveries and old favorites: Exploring great beauty and strength
Co-hosts Michael Stern and Dan Margolies delve into a diverse program beginning with the tragically short life and beautiful music of Lili Boulanger. We'll also hear a chamber work from Astor Piazzolla, concertos from Alexandre Guilmant and Frédéric Chopin, and the world premiere of a violin concerto by Chris Rogerson.
A spectrum of orchestral color from Smetana, Ravel, Barber and Bartók
Co-hosts Michael Stern and Dan Margolies celebrate the birthdays of Bedřich Smetana, Maurice Ravel, Samuel Barber and Béla Bartók. We'll hear works such as Smetana's crowd-lpleasing "Overture to the Bartered Bride," Ravel's "La valse," Barber's "Essay No. 2," Bartok's "Suite from The Miraculous Mandarin" and more music that showcases the full range of the Kansas City Symphony.
